Paper dolls are an extension of my 2-D work and relate to my other 3-D work. The dolls add a new level of interaction to my collages and straddle the line between image and object.
I remembered making construction paper dolls assembled with big brass brads in elementary school, so I started making dolls again as a way to bring my flat images to life. I became more interested after reading an article in a Japanese art magazine about French jumping-jack style dolls and assembling the example illustrations. I grabbed a stack of magazines and started making my own. I am interested in the strange things that happen to scale and anatomy when images exist in this semi-flat 3-D world. Reconciling pictorial illusion with the mechanics of articulation requires some awkward leaps of perspective and action, and I like the challenge of making interesting images that can be manipulated in space. I also like the way the pins at the joints simultaneously enable and restrict movement.
